As Coach Robert Smith and his Escambia County Middle School Eagles' regular season ends, they enter a seventh grade tournament with an unblemished 8-0 record.
In a win Thursday night against Ernest Ward, Eagles fans saw their star player Ja'Corey Ferrell scored 12 points in the 55-34 win.
In the McCall Invitation Tournament, first place went to ECMS and second place went to Flomaton Middle School. Tournament scores for the Eagles were 46-22 over Carver Middle School and 55-45 over Flomaton Middle School in the championship game.
The seventh grade tournament will take place at St. Paul in Mobile on January 21-22. "We started off slow after the holidays because of the lay-off," said coach Smith, "but we finally found our rhythm." Coach Smith will have to split his team in half to play in the St. Paul Tournament, and with only seven players eligible, he would lack the depth of the other teams. He has enjoyed this season and is looking forward to next season as well.
"They had an exceptional season, finishing undefeated," said Principal Quimby, "we are very proud of them!"
