The Northview Lady Chiefs, making up a game rained out two weeks ago, rained all over East Hill Christian's parade Tuesday in Bratt.
The Lady Chiefs, capitalizing on timely hitting and poor fielding, captured a 15-0 shutout win in a game shortened by the 10-run rule.
"We hit the ball well," Lady Chief Coach Sammy Day said. "Caitlin Spence did well pitching. She's a freshman and I decided it'd be a good time to let her throw some. Darbi Langhorne and Stephanie Covan had some big hits as well, both hitting a double."
Spence pitched five innings, allowing only one hit and didn't surrender a walk.
"We scattered out a lot of hits," Day said. "The rest were a lot of errors. We played pretty well, though, got a lot of hits and we didn't make any errors."
Baker 4
Northview 1
The Northview Lady Chiefs spent their Spring Break preparing for a district showdown with the Lady Gators of Baker High School. After a hard-fought struggle, the Lady Chiefs fell 4-1.
"We played well," Day said. "We just couldn't get back-to-back hits going. We had eight or nine hits, we actually out-hit them, but we could never tie anything together. We left a lot of runners on base."
Cassie Godwin, back from a concussion, took the loss at pitcher for the Lady Chiefs.
"We're playing a lot better," Day said. "We've just got to start tying hits together and scoring some runs. I'm feeling better about our chances."
Jackson 2
The Escambia Academy Lady Cougars found themselves in a bind Thursday in Canoe. Behind 2-1 in the fourth inning to a tough Jackson Academy team, Lady Cougars strung together three runs, mostly due to several bunts and a costly Jackson error, giving them a 4-2 lead.
"The turning point was definitely the three-run fourth inning," Lady Cougar Coach Darrell Jackson said. "We strung together a few hits and got back in the game."
Stacey Gibbs picked up the win for EA, pitching seven innings, allowing three hits, striking out three, and walking two.
Leading hitters for the Lady Cougars were Meagan Jackson, who went 2-for-3; and Courtney Smith, who hit 2-for-3 with one RBI.
"Jackson was a fairly strong team," Jackson said. "They were actually a very good team. We made some plays and came out with the win."
Jackson said his team was getting closer to being championship-caliber.
"The team's really come together," he said. "We're going to need to come together more. We've lost some games because of errors. If we cut down on our mistakes we'll be in Montgomery the second week of May (for the AISA championships). I feel very good about our team, but we've still got a long way to go."
