Applications are now being accepted for Youth Leadership Atmore Class of 2006.
The Youth Leadership Atmore (YLA) program begins in October with an overnight retreat where participants are introduced to the objectives of YLA. The retreat also allows students to meet each other and learn how to use their leadership skills to work together. From November through March, the class is involved in a series of interactive, hands-on activities, which take place one day a month. Participants have the opportunity to meet community leaders and visit major businesses, government and other facilities while
learning first hand how our community works and how leadership can make a difference. A graduation is held in April. YLA goals are to increase self-awareness and self-confidence, to provide leadership training and practice leadership roles, to teach students about community resources and community issues and to develop an understanding of life-long commitment to the individual's role in community service leading to trusteeship.
Those wanting to apply must fit certain criteria. To be eligible, students must be Atmore residents, high school juniors, must have a Grade Point Average (GPA) of 2.0 or higher and must be enrolled in one of the following schools:
Also, commit to 100 percent attendance.
Applications are available at the schools listed above and at the Chamber of Commerce. The deadline is at 5 p.m. on Sept. 7.
