It's always a good sign that your team is improving when after two weeks they have two more wins than the previous season, but Northview head coach Cody Keene says there is still plenty of work to do.
"I was real pleased with the effort of the kids," Keene said. "But we've got to keep it up. We made way too many mistakes last week. We still haven't played as physical as I think we can. We're still making too many penalties and mistakes, but we're playing very hard and I'm pleased with that."
The Chiefs (2-0) will not travel to Freeport, Fla., to take on the Freeport Bulldogs (1-1), a Class A school near Crestview. Keene said it would be a tough match-up for Northview. The game will be played at 7 p.m., instead of the scheduled 7:30 start.
"They beat South Walton (a district opponent for Northview) in the first game and lost to Walton," Keene said. "We've got to prepare. They look to be very well-coached and very disciplined. They threw the ball 30 times against Walton and that concerns me. They run a mid-line option and line up in the wishbone and run a power option. They throw a lot of formations at you and we're going to have to recognize those formations and know what to do with them. I think we'll match up with them pretty well. Their offensive line is a little bigger than ours."
With two wins under their belts, Keene said the Chiefs had proven they could play hard. But he felt they would have to prove a lot more before they could be considered a contender.
"I was proud of my kids (Friday night)," Keene said. "I thought we got a little tired. Our defense gave up a 17-play drive, and you can't do that. We've got to work hard to get better. We have got to be able to throw the football. We need to work on pass protection. We're going to have to do that to be able to win against some of these teams we're playing down the road."
The Chiefs will travel to face the Bulldogs at 7 p.m. Friday night.
