An Atmore couple was killed Monday afternoon when the truck they were traveling in was struck by a flatbed delivery truck at the corner of U.S. Hwy. 31 and Pineville Road in Nokomis.
The driver of the 1993 Chevrolet pickup truck, 76-year-old Harbert Earl Hall, and his wife, 77-year-old Annie Kirchharr Hall, both died as a result of injuries sustained from the accident. Mrs. Hall was pronounced dead on the scene and Mr. Hall was transported by Life Flight from a nearby hayfield to Baptist Hospital in Pensacola where he later died.
"We were dispatched from the Atmore Police Department and when we got there the ambulance was already on the scene and we had to use Jaws of Life to extract the driver out of the vehicle," Atmore Fire &Rescue Chief Gerry McGhee said. "We then called Life Flight and got Nokomis to set up an LZ (Landing Zone) for the helicopter."
The accident occurred at approximately 4:03 p.m. at mile marker 31. The Atmore Fire &Rescue was called to the scene to assist Nokomis Volunteer Fire Department personnel extract the victims from the mangled wreckage at around 4:15 p.m.
The driver of the 1995 Isuzu flatbed delivery truck, Woodrow Courtney of Flomaton, was transported to Atmore Community Hospital. He was later transferred to a nearby hospital.
The accident took several hours to clean up. According to McGhee the scene was cleared around 7 p.m.
The Atmore Police Department, Atmore Ambulance, the Alabama State Troopers Office and the Escambia County Sheriff's Office also responded to the accident.
