Seeing children excel in education has long been a part of Atmore resident, Rhonda McCorvey's life.
She is the daughter of longtime educator and principal, Woodrow McCorvey. He was principal of Escambia County Training School that was later named ECMS principal for 39 years. Mr. McCorvey passed away one year ago at the age of 87.
McCorvey received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Phycology and a Minor in Health from Alabama Sate University. She has taught high school in the Montgomery and Elmore school districts.
McCorvey, who recently moved back home to Atmore, is offering tutoring sessions for students in and around Atmore in honor of her legendary father. The program is called the Woodrow McCorvey Tutoring Program.
"Since I have been home, kids are approaching me in the grocery store and around town," McCorvey said. "They are begging for help with their school work. They all ask me if I would start tutoring them."
With McCorvey's educational background from her parents and of her own knowledge, she felt it important to start a tutoring program to help these students out. She plans to do 30 minute and one-hour sessions by appointment only.
McCorvey will hold the sessions at the Atmore Public Library to keep things on 'neutral territory'.
McCorvey will be offering assistance in science, health, English, social studies and her specialty, reading. She will also provide assistance to G.E.D. students and high school students prepping for their Exit Exam.
She also plans on teaching etiquette classes for young women and men. McCorvey will offer one-on-one instruction or an entire class if at least 10 students sign up.
Tutoring sessions will be $10 per hour and $5 for half hours. Students are asked to bring their schoolbooks pertaining to the subject being tutored.
