Eleven contestants graced the stage Friday night during the inaugural Miss Escambia County Middle School Pageant, which was made possible with the help of Escambia County High School.
"Overall, it was a success," first-year Escambia County Middle School principal Zickeyous Byrd said. "I was proud of the students that participated and I was proud of the large turnout we had from family and friends; it was a great event. I especially want to thank Mrs. Andrea' Hodges and Mrs. LaShondra Marshall from the high school for their help."
Hodges, a teacher at ECHS, and Marshall, ECHS bookkeeper, played a huge role in helping faculty and staff at ECMS organize the event.
"We held it as an outlet to give our young ladies something to look forward to each year," Byrd said.
Byrd estimated that there were more than 300 guests in attendance during the pageant.
In addition to going down in history as ECMS' first-ever queen, Karshella Purifoy received $200 for winning. First runner-up Joslin Frye was awarded $100 and second runner-up Samantha Byrd took home $50. Michaela Norman was named Top Sponsor and was awarded $100. The eighth grader had the most sponsors during the event.
Contestants were judged on physical fitness, formal wear, casual wear, contestant introductions and interviews with the judges.
