The Northview Lady Chiefs softball team gained two monstrous wins in the last week. On Friday they traveled to face off with South Walton in a district game and came away with a 17-4 victory.
On Monday NHS defeated Uriah 22-2.
Against South Walton the Lady Chiefs (5-1, 2-0 in Florida High School Athletic Association Class 2B District 1 play) got 16 hits and head coach Sammy Day said he was pleased with the effort.
"The main goal of this team is to win games and the district games are big," Day said. "It is always good to get those."
Caitlyn Spence took the mound again for the Lady Chiefs and allowed four runs on six hits, struck out five and walked two.
Spence was also 3-for-4 at the plate with a double and a triple. Kayla Presley led all hitters, going 4-for-4 with four RBI against the Lady Seahawks. Stephanie Covan was 2-for-3 with a double and four runs scored. Darbi Langhorne was 2-for-2 with four runs scored.
"A game like that gives you a chance to play everybody," Day said. "I don't like to embarrass anyone and I will never run the score up, but I can't tell my girls to go up there and strikeout either."
Against Uriah Spence threw a one-hit complete game. She struck out seven and did not allow a base runner after the first inning.
At the plate Rachel Killam was 2-for-3 with and inside-the-park home run.
"She didn't hit it over the fence, but they had a deep fence so she hit it and just kept on running," Day said.
Langhorne was 3-for-4 with three RBI. Covan was 3-for-3 with three RBI and Nikki Crabtree was 2-for-4 with a double. Meagan Pickern was 2-for-4 with a double and three RBI and Spence was 2-for-4 with a triple and two RBI.
The Lady Chiefs faced Jay Tuesday and the results will be in Sunday's Advance. They take on Walton tomorrow in Bratt at 4 p.m. in another big district game, Day said.
In baseball action
The Chiefs baseball team also grabbed a huge win over South Walton, leaving with a 21-8 victory.
"It was a good game and we got a lot of runners on base," NHS head coach Sid Wheatley said.
Wheatley said the Chiefs were up 13-1 in the fourth inning and South Walton put together a seven-run fourth inning on starter Matt Reynolds and reliever Jesse Hayes.
"To their credit, they did not back down and they made the score 13-8, but we were able to show character and add on some runs," Wheatley said.
Reynolds (3-1) grabbed the win for the 6-2 Chiefs, who now own a 2-0 record in FHSAA Class 2B District 1 play.
Phillip Enfinger hit a home run for the Chiefs. Jared Simpson was 2-for-3 at the plate and Nick Angeles, Jake Lowery and Brandon Walker all added two hits for NHS.
The road ahead is a tough one for the Chiefs and Wheatley understands this.
"We have a very important game against Walton Thursday because they are a good team," Wheatley said. "We know we have to be ready and at our best for that game."
