An Atmore woman was allegedly raped and assaulted by an unknown male in the early morning hours of Sunday, March 19, 2006 according to the Escambia County Sheriff's Office.
Officers received a call from a homeowner located on South 21st Avenue in Atmore Sunday morning stating there was a woman who came to his door who had been sexually assaulted.
According to the victim, she was walking home from a local grocery store in Atmore when she accepted a ride from an unknown subject. After riding with the offender for approximately one hour he drove down a dirt road and she then jumped out of the car and attempted to flee.
After a struggle the woman got away and ran to a residence and asked the homeowner to call the law enforcement.
"We know that something happened," Sheriff Grover Smith said. "There was an assault. The victim had injuries to her face and stated that she was sexually assaulted as well. At this point we are trying to put the pieces together."
The victim was transported by ambulance to Atmore Community Hospital where she was treated for her injuries and released.
The case is currently under investigation by the Escambia County Sheriff's Office. The Atmore Police Department is assisting the sheriff's office with the investigation.
