The technological juices were flowing April 10 at Jefferson Davis Community College's Atmore campus as the Second Annual Technical Awareness Day was in full swing. Approximately 500 high school students from Escambia County and Baldwin County gathered on the front lawn to find out what exactly JDCC in Atmore offers.
"We introduce programs on this day to show the students all the opportunities available to them here at the Atmore campus," Lee Barrentine, a professor at JDCC, said.
All the students involved are career tech students and Tech Prep at JDCC allows the students to take courses in high school that will count as credit towards a degree at JDCC.
"We have opened all our programs to the students to show them what our campus offers," Dr. Latitia McCane, director of Tech Prep, said.
Al Bennett, the coordinator of training for business and industry at JDCC, said the school brought many vendors in for the event.
"This is like a partnership with local businesses," Bennett said. "The businesses can meet the students and hire them right out of high school. It is a win-win situation because there are a lot of vendors who are suffering for employees."
The vendors at the event were, the Army National Guard, First National Bank &Trust, Weyerhaeuser, United Bank, AIDT and Holman and Fountain Correctional Facility.
Bennett said the connection between these businesses and the school can be beneficial.
"We are trying to help the community," he said. "If they know we have this then it is good for the community."
