The Northview Chiefs football team ended the spring with a bang. The Garnett vs. Gold, or White, was a thriller, as the Garnett team came away with a 19-14 victory.
The game opened to the tune of 13 straight Garnett points, but the Gold team cracked the goose egg with just over one minute left in the first half. The intensity was at full throttle as that score drew the Gold team within five points at 13-8.
With a score in the third quarter, the Garnett team widened the lead to 19-8, but an 18-yard scramble by the Gold team quarterback with 5:49 remaining on the clock closed the gap again to 19-14 for the Gold team.
The Gold team was driving, but their drive was halted by an interception and Garnett hung on for the 19-14 win.
"I was pleased with their execution and it was a great effort out there tonight," NHS head football coach Cody Keene said.
Before the game the Northview High School Booster Club served a hot dog supper to all the fans. Before the game Keene had asked the public to come support the Chiefs and the community reacted by filling the middle section of the stadium seats, which was roughly 400 people.
As far as the game went, Keene said there are things to work on, but he was not expecting perfection.
"We need to execute better, but the guys had a lot of enthusiasm and the kids are working hard," Keene said.
In the first half of the game running back Nakita Myles was used heavily for the Garnett team.
"Nakita is a tremendous back and we know we have to get him the football," Keene said.
The Chiefs lost quarterback Courtney Whatley to graduation and Keene said the starter for the 2006 season will probably be decided during the summer.
