For the second time in a week an Atmore man was hospitalized after a serious accident.
Antywon Madison, 22, was driving to Pensacola, Fla., from Atmore on state road 97 Thursday afternoon on a green 2000 Kawasaki Ninja. According to an incident report from the Florida Highway Patrol, Madison was entering a curve when he lost control of the motorcycle. After losing control, he entered the shoulder of the road and continued south on the shoulder hitting two mailboxes before being thrown from the bike.
Traveling with Madison on their motorcycles were his cousin, John Walker, and his friend Vincent Simmons. Simmons said one minute they were riding along the road and the next he looked back and saw nothing but dust.
"We were in front of him and we made the curve," Simmons said. "After the curve I looked back and saw a big cloud of dust."
Simmons turned around to check on Madison and found him lying unconscious.
A witness to the accident, Trammel Henry, said he was going north on state road 97 when he saw Madison run off the road.
"He started running along the edge and all I saw was poof, dust," Henry said. "He impacted hard. When I was on the scene he was unconscious and he was in really bad shape and his helmet was off."
Henry did not know how fast Madison was going, but felt it must have been at a fast pace due to the type of bike he was on.
"Have you ever seen one of those things go slow?," he said. "It isn't designed to go slow."
After the wreck, Madison was taken by Baptist LifeFlight to West Florida Hospital where he was found in serious condition.
Friday afternoon Madison said he broke his neck and hip but that he was glad to still be alive.
"I'm doing real good," Madison said. "I am blessed."
Other emergency personnel at the scene were Atmore Ambulance, Walnut Hill Volunteer Fire Department, Molino Fire Department and the Escambia County sheriff's department.
