Atmore resident Doug Chandler grew up as a "P.K.," a preacher's kid. With that title comes a lot of experiences and with those experiences came a lot of chances for storytelling.
Chandler recently decided to put the stories he accumulated over the years on paper, which is why he wrote the book "Shadowed by the Cross: Growing up a P.K."
Chandler said that as he grew up, people always expected his life to be different just because his father, the late Rev. Marcus Chandler, was a preacher.
"I had friends who asked me what was it like growing up with a preacher," Chandler said. "I always just thought of him as my dad, not my preacher."
"Shadowed by the Cross" is a book full of insightful tales of Chandler's life growing up the son of a Methodist preacher.
"The book consists of stories that I saw growing up as a preacher's kid," Chandler said. "Things I'd like to share with people about my dad's ministry."
Chandler said his life experiences are what encouraged him to write the book. He also said that it is something he will pass on to his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren for them to understand what his life was like growing up.
"I'm big into preserving family history and heritage," he said. "I was going to give the book to my kids for them to have."
"Shadowed by the Cross" is the first book Chandler has written, but he has dipped his hand into other writing projects before.
"I've got a puppet ministry at the church so I do puppet scripts," he said.
Chandler said he was not writing the book as a get-rich-quick scheme. In fact, he originally hadn't planned on selling the book at all. However, he has found a good cause to donate half of the proceeds to. He will donate the money to the Nothing But Nets campaign to end Malaria in third world countries.
"Ever since my dad passed this was something I wanted to do," he said. "I never had the intention of making money for it."
As of right now, Chandler is not keeping any of the books in stock, but he may start soon.
