PCI hosts annual fireworks show
The Poarch Band of Creek Indians will have an Independence Day celebration tonight that will bring fun and patriotic times for everyone.
The event will be held at Arrowhead Park on Lynn McGhee Drive in Poarch. Entertainment will will begin at 6 p.m. and the fireworks show will begin at 9 p.m.
Everyone is invited to attend the free event, but PCI community relations director, Sharon Delmar, said to remember that it is a family event and that there will not be a lot of seating available.

Jay Freedom Race slated July 4
Let Freedom Ring! And come run the Celebrate Freedom 5K Race in the small town of Jay, Fla. The race itself is best described as a low-key, fun and friendly race.
The race will be July 4 at 6 p.m. The 5K will be first and the one-mile to follow. The race will be held at Jay City Park. Registration will be held at 4:30 p.m. on the day of the race.

Christian Stewardship Seminar July 5-7
Atmore Apostolic Church will host a Christian Stewardship Seminar with the Rev. Brad Mayer of Buford, Ga. July 5-7 at 7 p.m. nightly.
In addition to the evening seminars, the Rev. Mayer will offer individual Christian Stewardship Workshop Sessions during the day on Saturday and Sunday by appointment only. There will be a limited number of appointments available. Only those attending the evening seminars will be eligible for the individual workshops. Brad Mayer is a public educator at Lanier Middle School in Buford, Ga., teaching eighth grade social studies to gifted students. He teaches stewardship classes at First Pentecostal Church of Buford and assists in coaching the Bible Quiz team. He travels extensively throughout the summer teaching stewardship seminars in various churches.
In addition to teaching the seminars and offering the individual workshop sessions, the Rev. Mayer will be ministering in the Sunday services at 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. on July 8.
Yankee Doodle Dandy night at VFW July 6
In celebration of our freedom and independence this Fourth of July 2007, participants at the VFW Friday Night Dance on July 6th are asked to don their red, white and blue attire and join the VFW's FREEDOM BAND for a grand old "Yankee Doodle Dandy Night at the VFW." It will be a "pot luck" dinner night as well with eating at 7:00 p.m. and dancing from 7:30 to 10:30 p.m. Door prizes for two best-dressed participants will be awarded. The VFW Post is located at 206 West Ashley Street in Atmore, and the dance is open to the general public for a donation of $5 per participant.
ECTS class reunion slated for July 6-8
A class reunion for the class of 1960 and 1961 of Escambia County Training School will be held July 6-8. It will begin at 5 p.m. on Friday night in the old (ECTS) Atmore Family Life Center, continue Saturday night at 7 p.m. in the old (ECTS) Atmore Family Life Center and conclude Sunday morning at 11 a.m. at Gaines Chapel AME located at 122 Carver Ave.

Sardis Baptist Church revival July 15-18
Sardis Baptist Church, located at 124 Sardis Church Rd., will hold revival July 15-18 with services at 6 p.m. Sunday evening and 7 p.m. Monday through Wednesday.

Fiddlers Convention slated for July 21
Plans for the 28th annual Atmore Rotary Club Fiddlers Convention are under way.
The event will be held at 2 p.m. on July 21 in the Escambia County High School auditorium. The house band will be "Down Home."
The categories of competition are as follows: vocal groups (acappela is acceptable), bands, dobro, banjo, guitar, mandolin and fiddlers. There is no registration fee. Awards are first place $100, second $75 and third $50 except for fiddlers, which is first $1,000, second $200 and third $100.

Mineola Baptist Homecoming July 22
Homecoming will be held at Mineola Baptist Church July 22 with worship service beginning at 10:30 a.m. The guest speaker will be Alben Gaston, Associate Pastor of Woodbridge Baptist Church in Mobile. Dinner on the grounds will be followed by a singing performance by Jimmy and Debbie Roberts and the Glory Road Quartet. Pastor, Marlon Brown, invites everyone to attend.
Revival will be held at Mineola Baptist Church July 23-27 with services beginning at 7 p.m. nightly. The guest speaker will be Alben Gaston, Associate Pastor of Woodbridge Baptist Church in Mobile.

Antioch Baptist food service ends Aug. 3
Antioch Baptist Church in Freemanville will be holding a summer food service program from June 6 through Aug. 3.
Meal times will be from 11:15 a.m until 11:30 a.m. Activities include, volleyball, basketball, checkers and other games from 10 a.m. until noon.

Covenant Hospice seeking volunteers
Covenant Hospice is seeking compassionate volunteers who are interested in making a difference in the lives of patients and families facing life-limiting illnesses. A volunteer training workshop will be held from 2 p.m. until 4 p.m. on July 9 at the Covenant Hospice office in Brewton, located at 1023 Douglas Ave., Suite 204.
Even if you only have a little time to give, you can make a difference. The workshop will discuss the many ways in which volunteers can choose to get involved, including providing patient/family support, visiting nursing homes, being ambassadors and assisting with fundraising activities and office tasks.
The workshop is free and lunch will be provided. Volunteers are needed in the following areas, Escambia, Monroe and Conecuh counties. To register or to learn more, please call Jodie Williams at 867-6993.

Reid State Nursing applications due July 23
Fall Semester application deadline for Practical Nursing at Reid State Technical College is July 23. Fall semester applicants for the Practical Nursing program are required to have application packets complete and in student services by July 23. A complete packet includes a nursing application, a Reid State admission application, transcripts of prior high school and college coursework, and admission test scores.

VFW hosts Friday night dances
Friday Night Dances at the VFW are open to the general public for a donation of $5 per participant. Country and soft rock music for dancing is provided by the VFW's FREEDOM BAND. If you like good, clean and safe fun, the VFW Post located at 206 West Ashley Street is the place to be on Friday nights from 7:30 to 10:30 p.m. "Pot luck" finger food and suppers are scheduled occasionally in conjunction with the dances to add to the merriment.
Remember the VFW Post in Atmore is the place to be on Friday nights.
Swimming, tennis lessons offered
The pool at Tom Byrne Park is officially open for the summer.
Public swimming is on Sunday through Saturday from 2 p.m. until 5 p.m. and Tuesdays and Thursdays from 7 p.m. until 9 p.m. Admission for public swimming is $1 for anyone 17 years old and younger and $1.50 for those 18 and older.
The pool is also available for rent for private parties on Mondays and Wednesdays from 5 p.m. until 9 p.m. and on Saturdays from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. Cost for pool rental is $35 per hour and that covers lifeguards and pool usage.
Day and night swimming lessons and tennis lessons are also available. Day swimming and tennis lessons are available in two-week sessions and there are three time slots for the lessons.
Times available are 9 a.m. until 10 a.m., 10 a.m. until 11 a.m. and 11 a.m. until noon. The cost is $20 per session.
Night swimming lesson sessions will last three weeks and take place on Tuesday and Thursday nights at one of three times, 5:30 p.m. until 6 p.m., 6 p.m. until 6:30 p.m. or 6:30 p.m. until 7 p.m. The cost is $30 per session.
