(This week The Atmore Advance spotlights 95-year-old Audrey Hammond. Audrey spent a lot of time traveling across the Southeast with her late husband, Sam, as he worked with the railroads.)
Q: When and where were you born?
A: I was born in Jay, Fla., on Nov. 22, 1911.
Q: Who were your parents?
A: J.C. Jones and Patricia Dixon Jones from Jay.
Q: Do you have any brothers or sisters?
A: I was the oldest of eight. There were four boys and four girls. I have one sister, the youngest, who is still living. Her name is Bobbie Lucille, she lives in Memphis, Tenn. I do get to see her a lot. She comes down to visit, but her trips are getting less frequent because she's getting older too.
All of the rest are dead.
Q: Where did you attend high school and college?
A: I went to school at a little two classroom school. It was called Greenwood. I went to high school at Fidelis High School, a little high school sitting in the middle of a bunch of farms.
Q: Do you do a lot of traveling?
A: I did with my husband. We married March 13, 1936 and I traveled with him for 15 years. He worked with the railroad. We traveled to Louisiana, Mississippi, Florida and in Alabama; that was our territory.
Q: Where was your favorite place?
A: I enjoyed a lot of them.
Q: What jobs have you held?
A: I worked before I married at a silk mill in Brewton. When I was traveling with my husband I didn't work. Then I worked as the lunchroom supervisor for 17 years before retiring. I had two schools, the junior high school and high school here.
Q: What was your husband's name?
A: Samuel, better known as Sam.
Q: Where was Sam from?
A: He was originally from Greenville. He died in 1995.
Q: Do you have any children or grandchildren?
A: No children. We had nieces and nephews.
Q: Where do you attend church?
A: I go when I'm able to the Community Church of Christ down next to the library.
Q: What keeps you busy these days?
A: I guess crocheting. I crochet a lot. When I retired, I had always wanted to paint pictures. I joined an art club and took art lessons and painting until I wasn't able to anymore.
I have a lot of friends and loved ones.
Q: What's your favorite TV show?
A: The Atlanta Braves.
Q: What's your favorite food?
A: I pretty much like all food except boiled okra and shrimp. I just do not like shrimp.
Q: What advice would you like to give people on staying healthy?
A: Keep going and stay busy. Keep your mind centered on other people instead of yourself.
