Latino in second round of voting
Atmore resident Bonnie Latino has made it through the first round of an online contest where people could vote for the first chapter of her book, "Your Gift to Me."
During the first round, "Your Gift to Me" finished in first place out of 296 entries.
The novel is now going through the second round of voting, which ends Oct. 8. All the votes from round one are wiped out and "Your Gift to Me" must gather new votes and comments.
To vote for Latino's romantic and patriotic novel about a woman from a town called Williams Station, visit www.yourgifttome.net and watch the minute and a half long video that tells the whole story of the book. At the end of the video there are directions on how to vote.
It is important to leave a comment after voting, even if it is just one word, in case there is a tie. If there is a tie, the author with the most comments will be the winner.
Latino is vying for publication with publishing company Simon and Schuster.

SAIL Center hosts flu clinic Thursday
The Atmore SAIL Center will host a public flu and pneumonia shot clinic Sept. 27 from 8 a.m. until noon.
Flu and pneumonia shots for those with Medicare Part 'B' as their primary health care insurance will be free.
For non-Medicare patients, costs for flu shots are $25 and pneumonia shots are $35.
Concerned Citizens blood drive Sunday
The Concerned Citizens of Atmore will host a blood drive Sept. 30 from 2 p.m. until 7 p.m. at Zion Star AME Zion Church.
The Concerned Citizens of Atmore are hosting the event to promote Sickle Cell Awareness month in the community.
All donors will receive a free T-shirt and will be entered to win two Delta Airlines International tickets. There will be free hotdogs and dessert. There will also be door prizes.
Auxiliary seeking WWII veterans
The American Legion Auxiliary is seeking the names of any area World War II veterans. Greater Mt. Triumph revival continues
Annual Revival Services of The Greater Mt. Triumph Missionary Baptist Church Sept. 24-28 at 7 p.m. nightly. The guest minister for the week is the Rev. John Henry Williams Jr., with Greater St. John Missionary Baptist Church in Birmingham.
GED given at Reid State Sept. 26-27
The GED test at Reid State will be held Sept. 26-27. The four parts (Writing/Essay, Social Studies, Science and Reading) of the GED test will be given.
All applicants must pre-register for the GED test. Registration is Sept. 24-25 from 7 a.m. until 2 p.m. in Building #100.
The GED test will be given Sept. 26-27 in Building #100. Applicants need to bring a picture ID and social security card.

Recycle Now meeting Saturday at library
Recycle Now is scheduled to meet at the public library at 10 a.m. on Sept. 29.
The group will talk about how to prepare for the workshop with the mayor's office.

The Greater Escambia Council for the Arts (GECA) is holding its annual membership drive during the month of September. Academy's fall carnival slated Oct. 2
Escambia Academy will be holding its fall carnival Oct. 2 from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m.
There will be a moonwalk, dunking booth, a country store, hayride, pony rides, raffle drawing, various games, food and a cakewalk. There will be a silent auction for furniture, a vacation getaway and much more.
Huxford Elementary carnival Oct. 4
Huxford Elementary School presents "Evening at the County Fair" Fall Carnival 2007 Oct. 4 from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m.
Tickets are four for $1 the day of the carnival.
There will be carnival games, a cakewalk, a dunking tank, a country prize box, a hayride and a Pepsi toss.
There will also be grilled hamburgers, hot dogs, pizza, popcorn, nachos and cheese, cotton candy and candied apples.

First Presbyterian to host reception
First Presbyterian Church will host a reception for its new minister, Rev. James Thorpe, and his family on Oct. 7 at 3 p.m.
The reception will be held in the church fellowship hall at 208 East Horner Street. The community is invited to come and join in welcoming the Thorpes to Atmore.
Neighborhood watch group to meet Oct. 9
Canoe/Robinsonville/Wawbeek neighborhood watch group will hold a meeting at 7 p.m. on Oct. 9 at the Canoe Civic Center.
The group encourages anyone in those areas to please plan on attending.
ECHS homecoming 2007 approaching
It's that time again. Escambia County High School Homecoming 2007 is approaching fast. This year's theme is "Bury the Tigers." Homecoming will be Oct. 8-12 and is going to be the best homecoming week yet. The Student Government Association would like graduated classes that ended with a "7" to join them at the Alumni Tea on Oct. 12 at 10 a.m. in the ECHS media center. Refreshments will be served. They would also like the alumni to stay and judge the annual homeroom door competition and be present at the homecoming pep rally.
Also, on Oct. 12, there will be a "Bury the Tigers" Homecoming Parade at 2:30 p.m. The parade route is to be announced. SGA would also ask that all past homecoming queens from any year come and represent their senior class at the homecoming game halftime show. Blood drive slated for Oct. 11 at City Hall
The Atmore Fire Department and the American Red Cross will be hosting a blood drive Oct. 11 from 1 p.m. until 6 p.m. The blood drive will be held in Atmore City Hall in the auditorium.
All donors will receive a free T-shirt and two weeks of free tanning at Club Sun.

FBC participates in Christian Care
First Baptist Church Atmore will participate in the ministry of the Atmore Area Christian Care Ministry. Receptacles will be placed in the sanctuary for the donations and food items.
Items particularly needed include, canned meats, canned pasta, canned fruit, corn meal, flour and cooking oil.
Betty Warren tourney scheduled Oct. 27
We are having the First Annual Betty Warren Invitational Tennis Tournament on Williams Station Day, Oct. 27 starting at 9 am. There will be an A and B Division for both male and female. Play will be in a round robin format. The cost is $15 per player and each player will get a T-shirt. Awards will be made for the winners.

County school system seeks information
In accordance with the Individuals with Disabilities Act (IDEA) Part B of 2004, the Escambia County School System seeks to locate and identify children ages' birth through 21, who because of handicapping conditions, may be in need of special education and/or related services. Referral and evaluation may begin at 30 months for preschoolers.

Friday night dances at VFW open to public
Friday Night Dances at the VFW are open to the general public for a donation of $5 per participant. Country and soft rock music for dancing is provided by the VFW's FREEDOM BAND. If you like good, clean, safe fun, the VFW Post located at 206 W. Ashley Street is the place to be on Friday nights from 7:30 p.m. until 10:30 p.m. "Pot luck" finger food and suppers are scheduled occasionally in conjunction with the dances to add to the merriment. Remember the VFW Post in Atmore is the place to be on Friday nights.
Concerned Citizens meet Saturdays
The Concerned Citizens of Atmore Civil Club meet every third Saturday of each month at 9:30 a.m. at 313 N. Main St., which is the Unity House.
Coalition against C&S meets weekly
The coalition against C&S Chemicals locating on Woods Road in Atmore holds a meeting every Tuesday evening at 6 p.m. at New Order Baptist Church.
