Historical Society plans open house for next weekend
In order for people to be better acquainted with the Atmore Historical Society, we are having an Open House from 3 p.m. until 4:30 p.m. Dec. 2 at our building on the corner of Main and Craig streets with refreshments and a few free books.
At the last count, we have a membership of some 50 people (couples and singles) plus some 10 or 12 businesses, churches and other organizations. The first group mostly lives or has lived in Atmore, and some other members joined us because they just enjoy and appreciate our fair city.
Our activities include collecting and preserving records, new and old. These come from business and city records, personal keepsakes, news items and the like. Also we assist people who wish to have their old houses or buildings certified as antique structures by the Alabama Historical Society.
From time-to-time we have taken one-day trips to visit various exhibits at art galleries, museums or Bellingrath Gardens, etc., all for very attractive charges.
Finally, we work with other organizations who are also interested in bettering the culture or our town, as well as ones in nearby towns. This includes maintaining and to some extent updating our own beautiful old facility.
Please come visit us Sunday as guest and/or members. We will have free refreshments, a few books and our 2007 series of Christmas ornaments for sale. They feature a depiction of an ancient locomotive with some historical information imprinted on the reverse side.
We hope to see you on Sunday afternoon.
