The hopes of attending the Republican National Convention were squashed for delegate hopeful Jim Corman last week.
Corman, an Atmore native, had hopes to attend the RNC in order to represent presidential candidate Mike Huckabee, but when Escambia County residents voted for John McCain, those dreams were pushed to the backburner.
Corman decided to support Huckabee because of a push from his daughter, Ellen, who was an intern at the Republican National Committee in Washington, D.C. during the summer. Due to his daughter’s persuasion, Corman began researching Huckabee.
Although Huckabee did not win the vote of Escambia County residents, he did win the state of Alabama.
In Escambia County, former Arkansas Gov. Huckabee had 40.47 percent of the vote, while United States Sen. McCain had 44.94 percent on Super Tuesday. Hillary Clinton, a New York senator, had 48.82 percent of Democratic voters and Illinois senator Barack Obama had 47.17 percent.
The Republican National Convention will be held Sept. 1-4 in Minneapolis-Saint Paul, Minn. and the Democratic National Convention will be held Aug. 25-28 in Denver, Colo.
