Jefferson Davis Community College will receive $150,000 for a library expansion, according to a recent press release from the Alabama Department of Postsecondary Education.
According to McBride, the library has needed improvements for some time.
Although plans have been discussed, the final plans will now come together.
McBride said the plans include incorporating the wide over-hangs on the library, which will allow the footprint of the library to be enlarged while leaving the roof the same as it is now.
More space is needed for electronic equipment and library media material.
The Alabama Public School and College Education Incentive Fund Council has awarded more than $4.9 million in grants to two-year colleges. Every application submitted by the Alabama Community College System (ACCS) received some funding.
During the 2007 regular session of the legislature passed an historic $1 billion bond issue with $55 million put aside to use for grants and infrastructure improvements. Over $97 million was requested by the various educational entities.
The Council left approximately $7 million of the grant money untouched to fund future grant application rounds.
The Alabama Public School and College Education Incentive Fund Council members are Lieutenant Governor, Jim Folsom Jr.; State Director of Finance, Jim Main; Governor’s Appointee (non-elected official), Dave Stewart, chief of staff; Chair of Senate Finance Taxation-Education Committee, Senator Hank Sanders; Chief of House Education Appropriations Committee, Representative Richard Lindsey and State Superintendent of Education, Joseph B. Morton.
