Vacation Bible School fun

There are some wonderful memories that can be made at Vacation Bible School.
I remember as a little girl whenever regular school let out, I would always be anxious for VBS to begin. I can even still remember every word to one of the Vacation Bible School songs that I learned when I was probably 8 or 9 years old. Needless to say, I was always looking forward to VBS and the fun times I would have with my friends there.
Along with the good times at Vacation Bible School, I also remember one of the most embarrassing moments I have ever endured. That embarrassing moment also happened one summer at VBS. And, although now I look back and realize what happened at VBS that day was truly not so bad, when I was young I wanted to cry and hide in the bathroom for the rest of the day.
I am not sure why administrators at Vacation Bible School think it is a cute idea for 6, 7 and 8 year olds to carry flags all the way down the long aisles of the church. Believe me, for a small child, carrying the American Flag down the aisle is not an easy task. Then, after carrying the flag down the aisle, that child is required to hoist the flag up and place it into the stand.
Well, I know that all of this sounds very easy but for an 8-year-old girl, carrying that flag down the aisle is the longest trek. It came my turn to carry the American Flag down the long aisle of the church in Brewton I was attending at the time. After I made it down the aisle and forced myself and the flag up the steps, I placed the flag in its holder. I thought I was home-free. I was wrong.
After everybody finished saying the Pledge of Allegiance I begin to walk off the stage when I saw a horrified look in the eyes of my peers. When I looked to see what everyone was pointing at, I saw the American Flag falling towards my head. Luckily, the flag missed me, but I was truly mortified, even as an 8-year-old.
Other than the horrifying moment when I was 8, every other VBS experience I have ever had were great ones. I always enjoyed the arts and crafts portion of each day. I always wanted to make my mom something special to take home for her to put on display for the entire world to see.
My favorite part though was the music, I guess that is how I still remember the words to the “VBS” song. Vacation Bible School songs are always the greatest. They are the kind of songs that get stuck in your head for days.
I hope all the kids in Atmore who attend Vacation Bible School this summer have as much fun and make as many great memories as I have at the fun event.
