Area law enforcement may be in for an upgrade if the most recent grant applied for is approved, according to Atmore director of public safety Glenn Carlee.
It was approved at Monday’s Atmore City Council meeting to apply for an Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs (ADECA) Law Enforcement/Traffic Safety Division (LETS) grant in order to purchase new radio systems for the Atmore Police Department.
Carlee said the current radio systems are old and irreparable.
The new radio system would be the same as the Escambia County Sheriff’s Department, Carlee said.
Carlee said the department is requesting new digital radios to replace the units in all patrol cars and the dispatch room.
The department recently received a letter from ADECA/LETS director Robert H. Pruit laying down the guidelines of the grant.
The letter states that ADECA/LETS is announcing its second round of funding for law enforcement equipment purchases from the “FY2007, Hurricane Emergency Equipment Grant.”
Carlee said he would not make a prediction on when he would find out whether or not the Atmore Police Department received the grant money.
