When LuLu’s at Homeport Marina owner Lucy Buffett visited Atmore during the first of May, she brought more than a taste of the Gulf Coast restaurant with her. She also brought along a touch of generosity.
Buffett was in town in May for a book signing of her cookbook, “Crazy Sista Cooking: Cuisine &Conversation,” held at First National Bank &Trust.
The proceeds from the book signing were donated to the Atmore Visual Arts Association, but according to Lucy Buffett team member Sarah Lake, Buffett decided to “round up” the donation, which was supposed to be less than $300. AVAA president Lisa Reynolds and affiliate Vikki Day accepted a check for $500 Tuesday morning.
Reynolds was thrilled with the $500 donation from Buffett.
Reynolds said prior to the May book signing, no one from AVAA approached Buffett about proceeds benefiting the organization.
Buffett approached a member of FNB&Trust with the notion of donating to an art organization and the ball starting rolling.
The $500 donation will go towards AVAA along with the Day Gallery on Main’s “Art in the Park,” which was originally scheduled for June 21, but has been moved to the fall due to hot weather. The money will also benefit area schools by having AVAA members visit to speak to the students about art and also by giving out art supplies.
AVAA will celebrate its year anniversary in August, according to Reynolds.
Day will open her new gallery, Day Gallery on Main, on July 1. It will be located at 120 S. Main St.
