Last day to register for photo shoot
Peacock Photography will give away a free photo shoot and photo package to one lucky 2009 senior. Stop by the store’s location before July 25 at 100 North Main St. in Atmore to register.
The winner will be announced July 28 and photos will need to be taken before Sept. 19.
The winner will win a free $50.00 sitting fee, one hour of photographing and 1-8×10, 2-5×7 and 2-4×6.
BOE committee to meet today
The Escambia County Board of Education’s Federal Programs Advisory Committee will meet June 25 at 1 p.m. The meeting will be held at the Atmore Central Office, located at 501 S. Pensacola Ave.

APL hosts movie day tomorrow
The Atmore Public Library will be showing Charlotte’s Web Thursday, June 26, 2008 at 2 p.m. The movie is free to children. The first 30 children will be able to attend so you must call and register before Thursday. We ask that if you are attending the movie arrive a few minutes early so we can start the movie at 2:00. J.F. Shields reunion begins tomorrow
The J.F. Shields high school reunion is scheduled for June 26-29.
Thursday Night is hospitality night at the school’s band room beginning at 7 p.m. Friday Morning Opening Ceremony and breakfast at the school cafeteria beginning at 8 a.m. Friday night banquet begins at 8 p.m., guest speaker will be Celeste Watts, who is president and owner of Risk Management &Information Systems and Dwight Wright, a former Buffalo Bills player, both of graduates of Shields.
Sunday the reunion will climax with a prayer breakfast at 8:30 a.m. in the school gymnasium.
Living Proof to play at Friendly Holiness
Friendly Holiness Church in Poarch will hold a singing at 7 p.m. on June 28. The guest singers will be Living Proof from Mobile. The Rev. Ray Ward, pastor, invites everyone to attend.
Reid State to host Atmore open house
Reid State Technical College will host an open house from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. on June 26 at its Atmore Campus (Nursing Department) located upstairs in the Atmore YMCA and Community Center located at 501 S. Pensacola Ave.

Muscogee Boys to perform June 28
Bay Springs Full Gospel Church will hold a singing June 28 at 6 p.m. featuring the Muscogee Boys and local talent. Also, there will be a benefit for Bro. Joe Welch held that same night. Everyone is welcome.

Softball tourney slated for June 28
There will be a co-ed softball tournament on June 28 in Bradberry Park. There is a $200 entry fee and participants will hit core 47 softballs.

Unity Day slated for June 29
Unity in the Community, originally scheduled for June 14, but was rained out, has been rescheduled for June 29 from 2 p.m. until 7 p.m. at Houston Avery Park in Atmore.
Meet and greet slated for June 30
The Atmore Area Chamber of Commerce invites you to meet and greet with U.S. Senator Jeff Sessions June 30 from 9:30 a.m. until 10:30 a.m. at the Day Gallery on Main, located at 120 S. Main St.
Refreshments will be served. Additional parking available behind the gallery.
Jay Freedom Run slated for July 4
The Jay Celebrate Freedom 5K and 1-mile fun run will be held at 6 p.m. on July 4 at the Jay City park located at 5259 Booker Lane in Jay, Fla.
Entry fee is $15 if registration is received or postmarked by June 30. Late registration is $20 beginning July 1 through race day.

Class of ‘58 to hold reunion July 5
Escambia County Training School Class of 1958 will host a reunion on July 5 at Weatherford’s Steak House (formally known as Best Western Restaurant). There will be a fee of $55 per person or $100 per couple. Deadline to pay is June 1.

Police Academy slated for July
The eighth annual Youth Police Academy will be held July 14-18 at Jefferson Davis Community College.
Lodging will be at JDCC’s Lakeview Dormitory.
Those interested must be ages 12-17 with an interest in law enforcement.
The cost is $175, which includes lodging, food, two academy T-shirts, graduation reception and training materials.

Fiddler’s Convention to be held July 19

Barnes family reunion July 11-13
The extended families of Elias L. Barnes and wife Elizabeth Lee will be coming together July 11-13 for a joyous family reunion at the Bethlehem Camp Ground in Bethlehem, Florida. The campground has dorm rooms, motel rooms, swimming pool, tennis and basketball courts and most importantly air conditioning!
The weekend will consist of getting to know one another, genealogy sessions (so bring your old family photos and information), pot luck dinners, fish fry and lots of fun for young and old alike.

Historical society breaks for summer
The Atmore Historical Society has disbanned for the summer. The next meeting will be held on Sept. 15, the third Monday of the month.

The American Red Cross encourages local resident to donate $1 to its Heroes campaign wherever you see an American Red Cross canister. Canisters are located at several Atmore retailers.
Historical society assists students
The Escambia County Historical Society has established a small scholarship award ($500.00) for second-term students at Jefferson Davis Community College to be first awarded at the fall term of this year. The award will go to a student majoring in history, archaeology or botany.
The funds will be placed in an account at the college bookstore on which the recipient may draw upon for books and supplies during their tenure at JDCC.
We are hoping for this to be an ongoing award and have designated a fund in the Society’s treasury. Anyone wishing make a tax-exempt donation may do so by contacting the society at 251-867-7332 or by mailing a check to ECHS Scholarship Fund, P.O. Box 276, Brewton, AL 36427.
