Golfers give back to others

Golf is one of the greatest games a person can play. It is peaceful, relaxing and a good way to hang out with friends.
It’s also a great way to raise money for worthy causes such as Relay for Life and the Alabama Dept. of Corrections Employee Support Fund.
June saw both charities raise money to help find ways to either cure a disease or support employees that are still recovering from devastating hurricanes.
It is really admirable how people will come together for events like this and give their time and money when they could just let the opportunity pass by.
The participants I met at these tournaments all had genuine heartfelt reasons for playing in the tournaments whether they had been victims themselves or know someone who went through a similar ordeal.
While not an avid golfer, I hope I can become one in the future and have the chance to play with the types of people I witnessed enjoying the game in the last month.
Golf seems to be the game of choice for a charitable sporting event and it is understandable why people would choose this sport.
There are a few reasons why I would choose golf as a way to help support a charity.
It has always been popular and fun, but the last decade the game has risen to new heights with Tiger Woods bringing in a huge fan base because of the incredible feats he has accomplished.
And the people included in that fan base jump at the opportunity to attempt and play as well as, if not better than, their hero in the PGA.
Another reason golf is a reasonable choice is, as I said earlier, that is a great way to spend a day whether you are out on the course alone or with some friends.
On a good day you will get to enjoy the sunlight and a cool breeze while driving a golf ball a couple hundred yards.
Golf is also easy to support because there are a lot of ways to find sponsors.
A business or organization can easily sponsor a hole, team or even prizes that might be given away at the event.
And with great citizens like there are in Atmore it is easy to believe that almost anyone would be willing to sign up and play for a charitable reason.
No one has to go out and play like a professional, all anyone really has to do is put a smile on their face and step out onto the tee box and hope if their shot isn’t perfect that the next person behind them is either better for scoring purposes or maybe even worse for comical purposes.
No one here has seen this sports editor play golf and I can honestly say they are lucky for it, but if the time comes for me to play in a tournament I will be happy to do it because it is all about helping out others in need.
