Lock up personal items for security
In speaking with the Atmore Police Department this week about how to keep personal items safe, one thing became clear. It is important to lock personal and important items up. That is one way to keep your privacy in check and your personal items in your custody.
APD investigator Chuck Brooks gave some great suggestions in how to keep up with your property.
Brooks said when you purchase an item that comes in mass production like a bicycle to make a scratch in the metal to mark it as yours. Many bicycles look the same and without a definitive marking, if yours gets stolen there is no way to find it.
Be certain to lock your personal belongings in a safe. Many stores carry safes that are effective, yet inexpensive. Buy one and put your checkbook, any expensive jewelry and credit card statements in it. This is an easy thing we can all do in an effort to take hold of our personal items and our lives.
Brooks also discussed identity theft with the Advance. One important thing to remember is that if it sounds too good to be true, it is.
There are several scams we receive in the mail each and every day. These scams come with letters that appear to be legit, but are not. Do not cash the check that comes with the letter because if you do your world could turn upside down.
It does not matter how many steps you take to keep your items secure because a “good” thief can find their way in, but use commonsense in the effort. Lock your house doors and windows. Make sure your car is locked. Lock your outside items in a shed.
Don’t become that person who says, “I didn’t think it could happen to me,” because it can.
