Historical Society to meet July 22
The Escambia County Historical Society's regular meeting is at 3 p.m. July 22 in the Fine Arts Building at Jefferson Davis Community College in Brewton. The program is to be presented by Jerry Gehman of Atmore, who will speak on local railroads and their impact on Escambia County and Atmore. Visitors are welcome.

Historical society assists students
The Escambia County Historical Society has established a small scholarship award ($500) for second-term students at Jefferson Davis Community College to be first awarded at the fall term of this year. The award will go to a student majoring in history, archaeology or botany.
The funds will be placed in an account at the college bookstore on which the recipient may draw upon for books and supplies during their tenure at JDCC.

St. Anna’s VBS to begin July 28
St. Anna’s Episcopal Church, located at 100 Lynn McGhee Drive in Poarch, has scheduled Vacation Bible School (VBS) that will be held afternoons from July 28 through Aug. 1 from noon until 4 p.m. Emphasis will be on Bible study, service music, storytelling and crafts.
Carpooling to and from Atmore will be arranged if warranted. Lunch and refreshments will be provided.

Twirl Time classes will start Aug. 4
Twirl Time classes will begin Aug. 4 for preschool through high school, beginner through advanced. Classes include dance twirl, one, two and three batons, hoops, fire batons, knives and tumbling. Free early bird registration is July 28 at the Byrneville Community Center from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m.

RPES to host Meet the Teacher Day
Rachel Patterson Elementary School will hold Meet the Teacher Day on Aug. 5 from 8 a.m. until noon. This is a perfect opportunity to bring school supplies and meet your child’s teacher. The first day of school will be Aug. 6.
ECMS to host orientation Aug. 5
Escambia County Middle School will host student orientations for new fifth and seventh graders on Aug. 5. Seventh graders will meet teachers and be orientated to schedules, lockers, etc. from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. Fifth graders will be orientated from 4 p.m. until 6 p.m. Fifth graders will also be orientated to schedules, transitions and lockers. Teachers will prepare hamburgers and hotdogs for the students.
Taste of the South looking for vendors
Taste of the South will be held Sept. 20 from 6 p.m. until 10 p.m. at Heritage Park in Atmore. The event is coordinated by the Leadership Atmore Class of 2004. Tickets will be $10. The $10 ticket will allow individuals to receive five “taste testing” tickets, allowing them to try some wonderful dishes.
If anyone is interested in having a vending booth at this event, contact the Atmore Area Chamber of Commerce.
There will be live entertainment provided by local talents.
Historical society breaks for summer
The Atmore Historical Society has disbanned for the summer. The next meeting will be held on Sept. 15, the third Monday of the month.
NWE registration held on Saturdays
Northwest Escambia football registration will be held from 10 a.m. until noon every Saturday in July at the Ernest Ward football field.
GECA to perform in Brewton July 25-27
The Greater Escambia Council for the Arts will be performing Andrew Lloyd Webber’s “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat” at W.S. Neal High School in Brewton.
Rehearsals for the production began in early June with a rigorous schedule of dance, blocking and music practices.
A difficult show requires talented actors; fortunately, Escambia County has always faithfully provided these.
One such talented person is Atmore native Perry Jones, who takes the title role of Joseph.
Alongside Jones are Ellen Johnson and Kate Sherrill who narrate the show.
Other notable characters are Pharaoh, played by John Mascara, an ex-off-Broadway actor from Walnut Hill, Fla.; Potiphar, played by the Rev. Mike McMorris; Mrs. Potiphar, played by Kris Woods and Jacob, played by Norman Boyd. The cast also includes the Hon. Steve Billy, the Hon. Dave Jordan, Marnin and Jerry Gehman, Timothy Huber, Daniel and Phil Johnson, Nathan Lindsey and Joseph Watson as Joseph’s brothers. The chorus also features the talents of Britney and Pam Dees, Delilah Holloway, Sharon Poulsen, Anne and Meg Sherrill, Gilda Stubben and Kaitlyn Woods. A children’s ensemble will also be prominently featured.
The show is directed by Phil Johnson.
Composed in 1976, “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat” is a sensory overload.
The show is a Biblical story woven with a colorful cacophony of lights, music and dancing.
Come experience the dream as GECA takes you back to ancient Israel and Egypt in a blaze of color.
Show dates are July 24th at 7 p.m.; July 25th at 7 p.m.; July 26th at 2 p.m. and July 27th at 2 p.m.
All performances will be in the auditorium at Neal High School in Brewton.
Tickets are $8 for adults and $6 for children under 12.

Sardis revival begins today
Sardis Baptist Church will host a revival on July 20-23. Morning worship will be at 11 a.m. and Sunday evening worship will be at 6 p.m.
Services will begin with food and fellowship in the fellowship hall each evening at 6 p.m. throughout the week and the worship service will follow at 7 p.m.
The Rev. Jerry Caylor will be the Evangelist and there will be special music.

"Miracles" will be the theme of this year's Vacation Bible School at Trinity Episcopal Church in Atmore. This year's session will be held from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. July 21 through July 25. On Friday, there will be a family night celebration.
