If you were planning on shopping for back-to-school clothing and supplies, this weekend is the time to make those purchases.
The State of Alabama’s three-day sales tax holiday officially begins at 12:01 a.m. Friday, Aug. 1 and ends at midnight on Sunday, Aug. 3. It exempts certain “covered items” from state sales tax.
According to the Alabama Department of Revenue’s Web site, retailers are required to participate and may not charge tax on items that are legally tax-exempt during the Sales Tax Holiday.
In the past, the City of Atmore has joined in with the state and waived its municipal sales tax, but will not participate this year.
Alabama’s exemptions include:
Clothing shall not include, belt buckles sold separately, costume masks sold separately, patches and emblems sold separately and sewing equipment and supplies including, but not limited to, knitting needles, patterns, pins, scissors, sewing machines, sewing needles, tape measures and thimbles. Sewing materials that become part of clothing including, but not limited to, buttons, fabric, lace, thread, yarn and zippers are also items excluded from the exemption.
In addition, clothing does not include clothing accessories or equipment, protective equipment or sport or recreational equipment
