Escambia Academy’s girls junior varsity basketball team participated in a team camp at Huntingdon College in Montgomery last month and competed with some of the state’s top AISA teams.
Head coach Larry Bonds said the camp went well and felt experience was gained from each game.
The first day of the camp started off hard for the Lady Cougars as they faced off against Sparta Academy.
The young team was defeated 42-8 by Sparta in their first match up of the day.
Bonds said after this game, all the other teams tried to write off the Cougars, but they would learn more as each game was played.
Later in the day, EA gained a victory over Pike Academy, but lost to Lee Scott that night.
Friday the Lady Cougars started with the 3A camp champions Meacon East and after being down 10-0 early, they would fight back with eighth graders Allie Brooks and Paige Allen.
Guards Niki Bryan, Lacie Flowers and Grayson Emmons added outside shooting for the Cougars to help bring the score closer.
In the last game of the tournament for EA, the Lady Cougars lost to Patrician 22-17 in an uphill battle.
Bonds said his team fought hard for a young team and looks forward to see what they do this season.
Bonds added that the community and parents of each player should be proud of the effort put forth in the team camp.
Bonds and the Lady Cougars would like to give a special thanks to sophomores Amber Huskey and Taylor Helton, who traveled to Huntingdon to help coach.
Another thanks goes to team moms Tyra Livingston and Michelle Parish who took the trip with the Cougars to help with team needs.
