Nancy Harrington Scheirer

STATE COLLEGE, Penn. – Nancy Harrington Scheirer, 83, of State College, Penn. died Sept. 5, 2008 at The Fairways at Brookline.
She and her twin sister Joan were born Aug. 22, 1925. They were the daughters of Dr. Gordon F. and Mary Welch Harrington of Charleroi, Penn. On Sept. 6, 1947 Nancy married Robert D. Scheirer, Jr. of State College, Penn. who survives.
She graduated with honors from Penn State University with a degree in fine arts in 1947. Nancy was a member of Alpha Chi Omega sorority and the honorary society Mortar Board.
Mrs. Scheirer was a portrait painter who taught school in Pennsylvania and Florida.
While living in Carlisle, Penn., Nancy was active in community organizations, serving as president of the Junior Hospital Auxiliary. She was president of the American Association of University Women. Mrs. Scheirer and her husband restored their pre-revolutionary stone house in Carlisle.
After moving to Atmore, she was president of the 20th Century Club and taught school. Later Mrs. Scheirer and her husband managed her family’s historic 18th century inn, in Scenery Hill, Penn. They retired to State College where Nancy was assistant social coordinator for Dr. and Mrs. Oswald at Penn State University.
Her sister, Joan H. Bigelow of Conyngham, Penn and brother, Gordon F. Harrington of Scenery Hill, Penn., preceded her in death.
She is survived by two sons, Mark G. and R. David III and a grandson, R. Clayton Scheirer of Birmingham.
A private memorial service will be held at the convenience of the family.
