The Cougars of Canoe remained winless after falling to the Clarke Prep Gators 42-7 Friday night in Grove Hill.
The Cougars (0-7, 0-3) struggled on both sides of the ball and were never able to find any sort of momentum.
Head coach Heath Gibson said his team had trouble getting anything going offensively and dropped passes all night.
Senior quarterback Jeff Price attempted all night to get the passes to his receivers, but the plays just fell short.
Price completed 1-of-15 passes for 5 yards, but ran the ball 13 times for 103 yards.
Senior running back Kawetta Coon scored the Cougars’ only touchdown of the night on a 5-yard scramble to the end zone.
Gibson said the touchdown by Coon was set up the previous play by the running back’s 61-yard run to the Gators’ 5-yard line.
Defensively, EA could not match up at any position on the field with the Gators.
The physical differences could be seen and it affected the mental landscape of the game, according to Gibson.
Gibson said the speed of the Gators was something that held the defense back. He added that once the Cougars figured out they could not keep up with the Gator offense it hurt their morale.
Leading tacklers for the Cougars were sophomore Dakota Carter who recorded five tackles and sophomore Will Hendrix who notched four.
Gibson said the Cougars have to let this game get past them and begin focusing on their next opponent. He added that each player should be prepared to come to practice on Monday and begin working towards a win.
Next Friday the Cougars travel to Meadowview Academy.
Kickoff is at 7 p.m.
