How could that happen?

It’s been five months that I have been in Atmore and I am still learning things every day.
I have gotten pretty accustomed to all of the happenings in the city whether it be simple things like a train rolling through every 10 minutes or a big issue like a night under the lights at a football stadium.
There are still things to be learned though and learning them sometimes comes at a price.
Last Friday marked the last football game for several area seniors from local schools. Some of these players have been the focus of stories or photos and others have not.
All of them have importance to someone and have an impact on their team and school, as well as the community.
A mistake was made by myself because I failed to realize (among all of the Halloween hoopla that was going on around me at work) that it was senior night at ECHS and EA.
While I was busy all day helping my co-workers prepare to take pictures and give out candy, these players were suiting up and getting ready for battle. Battle against an opponent and a battle against the emotions that they would feel by gracing their respective fields one final time.
I have honestly done my best to show each school as much coverage as possible. It can be a difficult job sometimes.
Friday night, I selected to go to Escambia Academy instead of ECHS because I had been to so many other ECHS games.
I have had a great time covering ECHS and salute them on the performances they put on this year. They did an outstanding job for their first year in 5A.
The Academy, like Northview, has traveled longer distances much of the season, and I felt they were rightfully chosen for that coverage.
Although I went to the Cougars game, I still missed their senior night just like I did at ECHS.
I never meant to make the mistake and I guess you could say it is the youth I have in my profession.
I still do not think that is any excuse. I never try to make excuses if I mess up. I’ll be the first to say I overlooked or didn’t pay enough attention to some kind of detail.
So, my apologies go out to the seniors at both schools for missing your photo opportunity with your families who have supported you for your whole athletic career.
I promise to try and improve at my job and please just be patient with me. Somethings might take more getting used to than others.
