ATMORE – Dr. Van L. McPherson Sr., 72, of Atmore passed away on Friday, Nov. 7, 2008.
He was a native of Little Rock (Wilcox County) and had been a resident of Atmore for most of his life. He was a graduate of Escambia County Training School Class of 1956 and received his associate’s degree in chemical engineering from Pensacola Junior College. He was the pastor of Faith Tabernacle Holiness Church in Atmore (Freemanville Community) for 24 years and held his membership at the Jones Street True Pentecostal Holiness Church. He was retired from Monsanto where he had worked in many capacities before retiring as an equipment operator. He was the founder of Watchmen United for Christ, organizer of the Teens for Christ group and a former member of the Progressive Civic and Recreational Club.
He leaves to cherish his precious memories, his loving wife, Margie Grissett-McPherson of Atmore; one daughter, Vangela (Walter) Franklin Sr. of Atmore; three sons, Gregory McPherson of Atlanta, Kenneth (Mary) McPherson of Brantley and Van Lee (Angelice) McPherson Jr. of Egg Harbor Township, N.J.; his father, Randolph McPherson of Atmore; four sisters, Lillie McPherson of Boston, Bernice McCaskill of Atmore, Donna (James) Grant of Marietta, Ga. and Jackie Wilson of Pensacola, Fla.; four brothers, Melvin (Mittie) McPherson of Dorchester, Mass., Kenneth (Jerrie) McPherson of Augusta, Ga. and Jimmie (Ann) McPherson and Charles McPherson, both of Atmore, 18 grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 14, 2008 at the Faith Tabernacle Holiness Church in Atmore with Bishop Willie L. Williams, pastor of Jones Street Holiness Church, officiating. Interment will be held in Stallworth Cemetery in Atmore.
Public viewing will be held from 2 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 13, 2008 at the funeral home and his body will lie instate at the church two hours prior to the funeral service with Turner Funeral Chapel, LLC of Atmore directing.
