With four starters stretched down to their final foul last Friday night, the Escambia County Lady Blue Devils showed composure and patience rarely seen in any team.
The Lady Blue Devils (2-0, 0-0) played the final quarter of their 47-35 victory over rival Baldwin County High School with their arms basically tied behind their backs because of six fouls called in the final minute of the third quarter and the first minute of the fourth quarter.
Lady Blue Devils head coach Ray Greer said it was amazing to see the team come together and play that well in the final minutes of the game.
Senior guard Latesha Lee led the ECHS in scoring with 18 points, while also posting three rebounds, two steals and one assist.
Senior forward Courtney English supported Lee’s performance by netting 11 points, grabbing six rebounds, one steal and a blocked shot.
Greer said Lee and English really helped keep the tempo of the game in the Lady Blue Devils favor.
Lady Blue Devils guard Jodeci Craft scored six points and finished the game with four rebounds, one steal and one assist.
Forward Canausha Crenshaw was a thief for the defense as she led the team in steals with four. Crenshaw also posted five points, four rebounds and two assists for ECHS.
Senior center Brittney Martin put up five points for the Lady Blue Devils and grabbed six rebounds and a steal.
ECHS forward Jordan Jaye snagged five rebounds and scored two points.
Greer said the whole game was a team effort and added that the team played strong until the final buzzer.
The next game for the Lady Blue Devils is Friday in the Daphne Thanksgiving tournament. ECHS opens up the tournament against Navarre High School of Navarre, Fla.
Going into the tournament, the Lady Blue Devils strength is their field goal percentage and their rebounding.
Their weakness lies in their free throw shooting, according to Greer.
Greer said his team is working to improve their free throw percentage during every practice.
The Lady Blue Devils tipoff against Navarre at noon on Friday.
