Escambia County’s Lady Blue Devils pushed their way past the Flomaton Hurricanes Tuesday night with a 53-36 victory in Flomaton.
Despite a poor shooting performance in the first half (5-for-32), the Lady Blue Devils (5-1) managed to overwhelm the Lady Hurricanes and pull away late in the second half.
ECHS had trouble shooting the ball all over the court in the first and second quarters hitting 26.6 percent of their shots inside and shooting 1-for-17 from three point range.
ECHS head coach Ray Greer said the poor shooting percentage in the first half was a mix of bad shots and bad luck.
Seniors Courtney English and Latesha Lee led the Lady Blue Devils to their fifth win of the season with strong performances all over the court.
English led ECHS in rebounds, blocks and steals posting 12 boards, four blocked shots and stealing the ball four times. She also finished with 10 points on the night.
Lee led the Lady Blue Devils in scoring and assists by recording 14 points and dishing our four assists. She also led the team in three-pointers made by hitting three deep range shots.
Greer said English and Lee’s performances really helped ECHS pick up this victory.
Lady Blue Devil Jodeci Craft put up a big night offensively pulling down rebounds, and led the team in that category. Craft pulled down five boards on offense and added one on defense to finish the game with six, and scored six points, stole the ball once and served up one assist against the Lady Hurricanes.
In the second half, the Lady Blue Devils picked up their shooting percentage and went 15-for-33 shooting the ball. From three-point range, ECHS improved to 5-for-12 of their shots. After starting the game hitting 15.6 percent of their shots, the Lady Devils shot 45 percent in the second half.
Greer said the baskets started to fall in their direction in the third and fourth quarters. He added that the girls finally got the ball under control before taking wild shots.
Senior Brittany Martin and sophomore Jordan Jaye each scored six points. Martin ended the game with one rebound and one steal. Jaye put up strong defensive numbers picking up five rebounds, two blocks, one steal and also had one assist.
ECHS’s Canausha Crenshaw scored four points, pulled down two rebounds and nabbed one steal in the game.
Guard Megan Hartley scored four points for the Lady Blue Devils, while stealing the ball twice, pulling down two rebounds and recording one assist.
Lady Devil Tiara Ankum hit one of the ECHS six three pointers to finish with three points, two boards and one steal.
Greer said his team’s performance pleased him, and showed him what they can do when hitting their shots. He added they have a long way to go to be the team he knows they can be.
The Lady Blue Devils next game is the first of a three game homestand. They take on Monroe County on Dec. 9 at home. Tipoff is at 6 p.m.
Greer said for his team to come out of their next three games as winners they need to improve their court awareness and shooting.
