Tears flowed freely as Betty Cox spoke about the outpouring of support shown Saturday to children in need this Christmas.
The International Association of Fire Fighters and Escambia County Professional Fire Fighters’ Association sponsored the Rooftop Watch, which had one firefighter staked out on the roof of Fred’s, until enough toys were collected to fill the trailer out front.
Daniel White of the Atmore Fire Department was this year’s chosen rooftop sitter, perched on the roof from 9 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. until he was relieved by Captain J.B. Blackmon who sat until 5:30 that evening.
Blackmon said he was also pleased with the outcome of the event.
Blackmon added he was surprised at the amount of toys given in spite of the poor economy.
White said he did not doubt how big of a turnout it would be, despite the tough economic times most are facing.
Cox said she was confident that support would be shown, but did not expect it to the extent she saw Saturday.
It was a blessing.”
White said the event went well, but it was important to remember why it was held and what it does for the community.
Cox said that because of the amount of toys she would be able to do more for the children than she expected.
Cox attributed the support to love.
The toys will be distributed this Saturday at a Christmas party and open house at the organization’s facility located at 8580 Hwy. 31 east behind the satellite courthouse in Atmore. The open house will be from noon until 1 p.m. and the party will follow immediately after.
White wished to express his appreciation to all those who participated in the event.
