The year 2008 was one where politics ranging from local to national dominated conversations, while the new Wind Creek Casino and Hotel more than took over it created a skyline for Atmore.
Bringing even more new construction to the city was Rivercane, the city’s 643-acre commercial development off I-65.
With a 90 percent chance of normal or increased hurricane activity, residents prepared for the effects of Tropical Storm Fay and Hurricane Gustav, but relief came when the storms did not.
Two of the year’s low points for the city were the deaths of two city council members, who at the time of their deaths were both serving as mayor pro-tem.

Agents with local drug task forces arrested Manuel Chapa, 35, of Brownsville, Texas just near the Poarch area for possession of methamphetamines. A search of his room at the Greenlawn Motel later revealed five ounces of methamphetamines, $827 cash and a set of digital drug scales.

more than 32 school systems in the state were having trouble making payroll, but Escambia County Board of Education Superintendent Billy Hines assured the county there was no need to be concerned.
