Aubrey Amos hangs out with his dog Hank

(This week The Atmore Advance visited with 71-year-old Aubrey Amos at his home on Deere Creek Road.)
Q: Where did you grow up?
A: Just down the road in the woods.
Q: What’s your dog’s name?
A: This is Hank. He keeps me company since my wife died.
Q: What was your wife’s name?
A: Shirley.
Q: What did you like the most about her?
A: Her smile. At her funeral the pastor told me that no matter what kind of shape she got in she always had that smile.
Q: How did you and Shirley meet?
A: I met this car driving and she waved, and I waved back. That was July, and we got married on Oct. 20, 1972.
Q: What is one of your best memories of being with Shirley?
A: When we’d take trips to the mountains and when we used to go to Atlanta. I had two aunts and a cousin there.
Also, going to Stone Mountain. It’s another interesting place to go. It’s got the good view, the train, old cars and the shows on the side of the mountain.
Q: Where’s somewhere you haven’t gone yet but would like to go?
A: Probably out West to see the mountains, the farmland and sky out there.
Q: Who do you think has been the best president in your lifetime? Why?
A: Ronald Reagan. He got everybody back working together. I thought Kennedy was good too.
Q: What is a historical moment from your lifetime that stands out to you?
A: Well, around here a plane fell in a field in 1959 and another one fell about the same time.
The worst was Hitler and World War II
Q: What do you remember about that time?
A: I had two hound dogs named Hitler and Blackout. We had no electricity, and all I could remember was getting a radio, and we could get batteries to work once in a while and those were the only two words you’d hear, Hitler and blackout.
Q: Do you have children? Any grandchildren?
A: I have one daughter, Brenda Moss and she has two daughters. I have two sons, David and Neal Amos. David has two sons and Neal has one.
Q: What did you do for a living?
A: I worked for Scott Paper Co. in Mobile from 1975 to 1999.
Q: What was your first job?
A: Working at the Escambia Drug Store. I sold ice cream. I worked two years without a day off work.
It didn’t take me long to figure out it was much cooler than picking cotton.
Q: Do you have a New Year’s resolution?
A: To keep from falling. I’m just trying to be more careful.
Q: Do you have any hobbies?
A: Just watching television these days. I had built a shop with my brother Arnold when I retired, but I never got around to using it. I didn’t ever know I could drive so many nails.
