Legends never die, nor are they forgotten, but even legends like to step into the spotlight and prove they have the skill and prowess that made them a legend.
Former high school football coach and Atmore resident Carl Madison is doing just that as he has accepted a position to be the offensive coordinator for the Tate Aggies in Cantonment, Fla.
Madison previously held the position as head coach at Tate for 12 years before moving onto the same position at Milton High School.
Madison won a state title with the Aggies in 1980.
Madison said he is excited about the opportunity to coach again after a five-year hiatus.
Madison will be familiar with at least one coach on the Aggies’ staff being that he coached him during his stint as head coach.
Aggies head coach Ed Rigby played for Madison during his freshman year, which turned out to be Madison’s last at the school.
Rigby said he is fond of Madison and even kept in touch with him over the years after his departure.
The newly hired offensive coordinator is going to help the Aggies offense install a split-back veer offense that will attack the ground.
Madison said in his offense the quarterback is in charge of all decision making.
A coach with Madison’s view is not one that is in hot demand in this spread-offense era.
Rigby said he decided to go with more of a ground attack with his offense and he knew who to hire after choosing to do so.
The Aggies look to be in good shape for the 2009 football season since they have 17 starters returning.
The bright spot of the offense will be a third-year starting quarterback surrounded by several skill players.
Rigby said his offense is going to look good and be strong because of the talent and coaching that is in place.
