Stepping into a grain silo Monday morning is something Ed Nowlin will always remember as not just a mistake, but a “stupid one.”
The moment when he realized just how “stupid” of a mistake it was, was when he found himself waist deep in soybeans and unable to get out.
Nowlin was trapped in the silo at Escambia Grain Corporation in Walnut Hill, Fla. for close to three hours before authorities from the Escambia County Fire Rescue Special Operations team rescued him.
According to Captain Richard Hawkins who assisted in the rescue, there was a concern of a wall of soybeans, approximately 10 feet above Nowlin, falling and encapsulating him.
Officials were also initially concerned about the explosive nature of dust in the silo.
Nowlin said he is very thankful for the work the rescuers did, but was frustrated with the extra precautions that had to be taken to prevent lawsuits.
He again said he was thankful for their help and his frustration with the situation was nothing personal against them.
As for making the same mistake twice, Nowlin said it will not be happening again.
