A mix of experienced veterans and hungry rookies including a rookie head coach are going to determine how the season shapes up for the Escambia County Blue Devils baseball season.
Blue Devils head coach David Hill is in his first year at the helm of the program after serving previously as the assistant.
Hill said he is excited about the opportunity to lead the team.
The Blue Devils return several players from last season’s team that won the county tournament.
Adding to the team are a few new faces that should help tear up the base path as well as protect the field defensively.
Hill said he is happy about the mix of players that are going to take the field for the Blue Devils.
The experienced players and the rookies are all bringing something to the table that ECHS needs.
Hill said the veterans are all versatile and can play more than one position on the field. He added that the new players are smart and listen well.
The strength of the Blue Devils is the leadership and talent of their seniors.
Hill said there are four seniors on the team, and they each bring something special.
As far as weaknesses go, the Blue Devils are still working on their pitching.
Hill said the team has plenty of players that can throw, but added that it is not clear how far those guys can go.
The schedule for the Blue Devils has changed with the move up to Class 5A.
Hill said there are more Class 6A teams on the schedule to help build up experience. He added that the region should be a tough slate.
The Blue Devils first game is Monday in Mobile at LeFlore.
