As of 8 a.m. Friday morning, the City of Atmore will now only be covered by Atmore Ambulance service after Kelley’s Ambulance Service shut down operation.
Atmore Public Safety Director Glenn Carlee said the closing would not affect the safety of Atmore’s residents.
Carlee said the previous system was a rotation system between the two services, which was in use when Kelley’s was operating.
Karen Jay, who owns Atmore Ambulance with her husband, Frank Jay, said their business has been able to work out a deal with Kelley’s so that the city will still be fully covered.
Jay said along with adding the third truck, Atmore Ambulance has also hired some of Kelley’s employees. Jay said while their business was already staffed to handle a third truck, they were happy to hire more people for both them and the community.
Kelley said he would release a statement Monday about the matter, declining to comment on Friday saying it was a very emotional day for him. Kelley’s Ambulance Service first opened in December 2004.
