Sign ups for the Atmore Area YMCA T-ball league have officially ended and practices begin Thursday at 5:30 p.m.
Fifty-two children signed up for the YMCA T-ball with four teams being put together.
The YMCA T-ball league is for three to five-year-old children and is a learning experience to prepare them if they play baseball in the future.
YMCA Sports Director Ross Terry said YMCA T-ball is a great way for kids to learn fundamentals of the game.
Aside from teaching the children the fundamentals of the game, the YMCA T-ball league puts the children in an environment playing sports with other participants.
Tammy Graham, executive director for the Atmore Area YMCA, said it is introduces the children to organized sports.
The season for the league runs starting in mid-April and runs until the end of May or about six weeks.
Games and practices last about 45 minutes for the league so the coaches and parents are able to keep their child’s attention focused on the game.
Terry said that a skills clinic is going to take place at 5:30 p.m. on April 13.
Another selling point for the YMCA T-ball league is the family interaction that takes place.
Terry said that parents are allowed and encouraged to take the field with their children.
Graham added that this is something fun for a family to take part in.
To ensure that every child is able to have a chance to participate in the game, every player takes to the field and is rotated around in position.
Terry said most players hit the ball to the same place so every player gets to take the mound as the pitcher.
The Atmore Area YMCA is a 50©3 non-profit charitable organization.
