Winning championships is an important aspect of an athlete’s life, but passing the test and making the grade is even more important if an athlete wants to compete for that championship.
Academics are always under strict scrutiny especially for student-athletes, and at Escambia Academy four of their athletes have proven that scoring points and having a high GPA is always possible.
Cougar senior athletes Alan Ash, Andrea Nall, Seth Lassiter and Alaina Arnold have all been named as 2008-09 AISA Student-Athlete Award winners for their performances in class and in their respective sports.
Ash, this year’s valedictorian at the Academy, has also been named to the AISA All-State Academic Team along with salutatorian Nall.
Ash said being selected for these honors makes him feel good because his efforts have paid off. He added that he was able to reach his goals because of his time management.
For Nall, it took a lot to stay motivated because of the strenuous schedule that school and her teams call for.
She said it takes a lot dedication to get homework done after practicing for hours all week. She added that it helps when you have friends that have the same values when it comes to academics.
Seth Lassiter puts a lot of his training into extensive weight lifting, which helped him become a state champion in that sport.
He said that it is tough to keep everything stable when you are training day in and day out and going to school. He added that this accomplishment is a reality for him because he is graduating.
Alaina Arnold said she knows that a student-athlete’s academics are looked at heavily by colleges. She added that she’s happy that her hard work has paid off to help her move further in her goals.
Having intelligent student-athlets is something that boast’s well for the private school.
Athletic director Heath Gibson said all of the hard work that these students puts is going to help in the future.
