Making her way around the Gulf Coast region, Bishop Katharine Jefferts Schori, presiding bishop of the Episcopal Church, made a stop at St. Anna’s in Poarch on Saturday.
Schori was welcomed to Poarch with traditional Native American dancing and chants. During her time she toured the Tribal complex and participated in a prayer service and reception at the church.
St. Anna’s parishioner Lee “Lavan” Martin said the visit was very meaningful to the church and the Tribe.
During Saturday’s service, Tribal Chairman Buford Rolin acknowledged the importance of the church’s involvement with the Tribe.
Rolin made mention of the St. Anna’s records, which included birth dates, baptismal dates and recognition of their Creek ethnicity, being a critical reason for the Tribe’s federal recognition.
Schori gave a short prayer during her visit asking for the Tribe and surrounding communities to blessed with wisdom and the ability to transform those around them in a Godly way.
