In a historical election for the Poarch Band of Creek Indians, candidate Stephanie A. Bryan was voted the vice-chairman of the Tribal council and Keith Martin and Berry L. Ross were chosen for the council’s at-large positions.
The election marked the first time that the general council had the opportunity to vote specifically for an executive position on the council. The change was voted on and amended by the Tribal council last year.
Bryan, who ran as a three-year incumbent, defeated opponent Eddie Tullis. As vice-chairman of the council she will also serve as the chair of the tribal gaming commission.
Martin and Ross beat out 14 other candidates for the member-at-large positions.
Martin is a current council member and has served as the chairman of the PCI Gaming Board since 2006. This will be Ross’ first time serving on the council.
There were 1,179 votes cast, which was split between 485 absentee ballots and 694 general votes.
The results are unofficial pending certification.
The swearing-in of candidates will occur at 4 p.m. on June 16 at the Tribal council meeting.
