Coby Smith pitched a complete game no-hitter for the Atmore Rotary Club Tigers Monday night picking up a huge 12-1 win over the First National Bank &Trust Athletics in Cal Ripken Major League action at Tom Byrne Park.
Smith struck out 12 batters giving up his lone run in the bottom of the first.
The Tigers started the game with a bang as Tristan McAnally and Coby Smith were both walked with Malik Salter knocking both in with a single. Devonte Stevens was walked to put two men on the bases when Jacob Esser ripped a double to score both runners to make the score 4-0 in favor of the Tigers.
In the Athletics’ first at-bat, Sawyer made it to base on a walk and stole second and third base before Garrett Kirk was walked. Kirk then stole second, which allowed Sawyer to steal his third base of the night to pull his team within three runs.
In the second inning, McAnally again made it on base with an infield single, which was followed up by consecutive hits by Coby and Tanner Smith. McAnally scored on Tanner Smith’s single, while Coby Smith and Tanner Smith both scored on passed balls by the catcher. Heading into the bottom of the second the scoreboard read 7-1 with the Tigers leading.
After their run in the first, the Athletics had a hard time reaching base as Smith mowed batters down one-by-one. Each time an A’s batter would reach on a walk, Smith would answer back with strikeouts.
The Tigers continued their domination in the third inning as Esser and Noah Brooks each got on base and scored a run to make the score 9-1.
In the final inning, the Tigers put the 10-run rule into effect as Tanner Smith, Stephens and Esser all scooted around the bases to pull further ahead 12-1.
Warriors 11
Rangers 2
A huge fourth inning rally helped the United Bank Warriors crush the Atmore Veterans of Foreign Wars Rangers 11-2 Monday night in a battle of Cal Ripken Major League teams.
Brodie Amos got the Warriors on the scoreboard first by reaching base on an error by the shortstop. He scored on Nate Smith’s ground out to the second baseman, which allowed the Warriors to jump on top of the Rangers 1-0.
The Warriors added one run to their lead in the second inning with Billy Powell ripping a single and scoring on a hit by Tanner Plant, which was again poorly fielded by the Rangers shortstop.
The Rangers finally put runs on the board in the third inning as Perry Metzler and Deandres McCarthy got base hits and scrambled around to home plate to tie the game at two.
In the fourth inning, the Warriors took to the plate with a new attitude and scored seven runs to pile on a huge 9-2 lead. Nate Smith, Dalton Daniels, Powell, Hunter Sherouse, Justin Johnson, Chris Kilpatrick and Amos all crossed the plate in the inning.
Daniels and Powell scored again in the fifth inning to put their team up by nine with the Rangers unable to counter in the bottom half of the inning.
