After 54 years of marriage, one would think Cornell Torrence, better known as Coach Torrence, would learn to always listen to his wife, Mavis.
Monday was one of those days he didn’t listen. He later realized he should have worn a suit.
Torrence, who serves the City of Atmore as a councilman, was presented a key to the city at Monday’s meeting in “recognition of 45 years of outstanding service to his community, especially to the youth of our city.”
This year will mark the first Torrence has not worked as park director at Houston Avery Park.
Many of the kids Torrence worked with have gone on to be doctors, lawyers and pro football players to name a few.
In other business, the council accepted a $51,086 bid from Southern Land Development to open a cell at the city land fill, OK’d the transfer of two retail beer licenses and one retail wine license, authorized disposal of an old garbage truck and approved use of Houston Avery Park for Stomp the Yard on July 25.
