Melvin Odell Jernigan, age 70, of Excel, died Monday, June 15, 2009 at Providence Hospital in Mobile. He was a native of Escambia County and had resided in Excel most of his life.
He attended the Springhill Primitive Baptist Church and had worked as a fabric handler at Vanity Fair Mills.
He is preceded in death by his wife Barbara Jernigan.
He is survived by three sons, Bruce (Gayle) Jernigan, of Goodway, Randall (Rhonda) Jernigan of Frisco City, and Matt (Rebecca) Jernigan of Excel; one daughter, Linda (Victor) Gulley of Excel; one brother, Howard Jernigan of Bay Minette; two sisters, Melba Byrd and Eloise Bowers, both of Mobile; nine grandchildren; ten great- grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. on Wednesday, June 17, 2009 at Johnson Funeral Home.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. on Thursday, June 18, 2009 at the Springhill Primitive Baptist Church in Flomaton with Elder Charles Ellis and Rev. David Baggett officiating. Interment will follow in the Springhill Primitive Baptist Cemetery with Johnson Funeral Home in charge of all arrangements.
