Atmore awarded $468,338 grant for sidewalks

Atmore residents who enjoy walking throughout town will soon be able to extend their routes.
Monday afternoon, the Atmore City Council was awarded a $468,338 grant from the Alabama Department of Transportation to construct additional sidewalks throughout the city.
The Transportation Enhancement project grant with funding by the Federal Highway Administration will help construct sidewalks on parts of Ashley and Presley streets.
Atmore Mayor Howard Shell said he was pleased with the grant and looks forward to improving Atmore’s “quality of life.”
Monday’s grant is not the first one the City of Atmore has received. Over the past five years, the city has received numerous grants to help with repairs and adding sidewalks in various areas throughout Atmore.
Not only will additional sidewalks help keep Atmore residents safe from oncoming traffic when walking or jogging through town, Shell believes it helps attract visitors and possible new residents.
The next step for the council is to bid the project out. Shell said work would start shortly following the awarding of the bid.
