An Escambia Academy student-athlete has received a prestigious honor by being given a position on the Alabama High School Rodeo Team and will compete in the 61st Annual National High School Finals Rodeo in the bull riding competition from July 19 through 25 in Farmington, N.M.
Cameron McGhee, a sophomore at Escambia Academy, earned his position on the team by finishing fifth in the bull riding at the state competition in Andalusia on June 22.
At the competition, McGhee and the team from Alabama will compete against more than 1,500 competitors from 41 states, five Canadian Provinces and Australia, which makes this the world’s largest rodeo.
According to a press release from the National High School Rodeo Association, the contestants will compete for more than $200,000 in cash prizes, more than $325,000 in college scholarships and the opportunity to be named the National High School Rodeo Champion.
To become the champion, contestants must finish in the Top 20 after two rounds before advancing to the final championship performance on July 25.
While at the competition, competitors will also have the chance to represent their team in a volleyball tournament, nightly dance contests, a talent show, compete in an NRA rifle shooting competition and test their skills in a Knowledge Bowl competition.
